ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT

Seabright Get-away

Tucked behind the primary residence on this small, unconventional lot in the Seabright neighborhood of Santa Cruz rises a custom accessory dwelling unit (ADU) with all the comforts of home.

A cozy Backyard home

Tucked into the backyard of a family home, this custom-built ADU blends comfort, craftsmanship, and clever design. A sleeping loft maximizes space, while custom woodworking and a wood-burning stove bring warmth and character. The efficient kitchen is fully equipped for daily living, and a set of French doors opens wide to connect the indoors with the surrounding garden. It’s a cozy, functional retreat—designed to feel anything but small.

A Tiny Footprint

The narrow, winding roads of this beachside santa cruz neighborhood meant there wasn’t much room to build out. So instead, the homeowners asked us to go up. Meeting strict building codes, the ADU design features a sleeping loft, instead of a full-blown second floor. the extra space with well-placed windows and lighting makes the tiny home feel large.

lofty ambitions

The loft stairs are steep, no doubt, but they are thoughtfully engineered with a code-compliant rise and run that was calculated to maximize each step with minimal foot print. Our architectural design team wanted to fit the most in to this tiny space without compromising a safe and accessible passageway to the the sleeping loft. a Stout and sturdy walnut wood Stair rail system Adds additional comfort to the climber as they look down. The post and rails wer custom built by Trumanmade, a maker of local furniture and interior woodwork.
